Jo Thomas is an artist whose work responds to place. The work encompasses a range of media: gestures, photographs, actions, being, drawing, walking, instruments of intervention and participation. She completed a PhD entitled ‘Presencing Place, an enquiry into the knowing and shaping of place through expanded arts practices’ at Oxford Brookes University in which she developed 45 gestures during a 5 year period. In exhibitions, curatorial projects and commissions she has worked with Whitley Arts Festival, Open Hand Open Space, Jelly, Museum of Reading, Oxford Brookes University, Ovada, South Hill Park, ReOrsa, Reading UK CIC and self initiated projects. She is a founder member of Figure Ground, an experienced artist led organisation working within the public realm that focuses on artist development through collaborative practice and engaged debate. Their latest project is a road trip looking at public art around England. She has taught Arts Practice in Further and Higher Education since 2000. Most recently as an Associate Lecturer on the Ual Foundation in Art and Design and Access to Art and Design HE courses at Reading College.
